The Gambia

The journey to the Gambia started in 2015 after our South African project. Biyi and volunteer team members from the United Kingdom have been over a good number of times since then almost on annual basis.

Outreach programs have been carried out in various locations such as: Manjai; Brikama; Serekunda in the capital of Banjul and Bansang which is a 5-hour drive from the capital.

As with all our Outreaches, we take proper advantage of our Local Staff and have a reputable team who work very hard to ensure that needs are met.

We piloted our ‘in absentia’ outreaches (without a UK representative) in The Gambia and they have been hugely successful. We visit villages and hamlets local to the Bansang area every month and have days worth of screening. From this screen, we identify 20 patients (with both Cataract and Ptgeryium) and perform surgery. Due to the climate in The Gambia, the incidence of eye infections and cataracts is high.
